The Story Behind Amani Botanica

Why We Created Amani Botanica: A Story of Family, Tradition & the Wisdom of Nature

There are some things we inherit from our families that never arrive in a box.

They are passed down through stories, rituals, recipes, remedies and quiet moments of wisdom.

For us, that wisdom began with our mother.

A Childhood Rooted in Traditional Remedies

Our mother was a nurse in the late 1960s and early 1970s, growing up during apartheid South Africa.

Healthcare was not as accessible as it is today. Doctors, hospitals and specialist care were not always within easy reach, particularly for many families and communities. As a result, generations grew up knowing how to turn to what they had around them – plants, oils, herbs, foods and traditional home remedies that had been passed down through families.

Our mother carried much of that knowledge with her.

As a nurse, she understood the importance of modern medicine. But she also grew up with an appreciation for the traditional remedies that had been part of her family and community for generations.

When we were young, she continued that tradition.

Whenever she could, she looked for natural ways to support our wellbeing, often alongside the treatments and medicines prescribed by doctors.

It wasn’t about choosing nature instead of medicine.

It was about understanding that there could be wisdom in both.

That philosophy stayed with us.

When Skin Became Personal

For Mumtaz, this wasn’t simply an interest in natural remedies.

It became personal very early in life.

At just four years old, Mumtaz was diagnosed with psoriasis, a chronic immune-mediated disease that can have a profound physical and emotional impact on those who live with it.

At fourteen, she was diagnosed with rosacea, a chronic inflammatory skin condition involving immune and vascular dysfunction.

Growing up with both conditions meant becoming intimately familiar with skin that could be unpredictable, uncomfortable and difficult to manage.

It meant learning early that skincare isn’t simply about appearance.

Sometimes, it is about comfort.

Sometimes, it is about confidence.

Sometimes, it is about finding something that makes you feel a little more at home in your own skin.

Throughout her life, Mumtaz continued to explore natural approaches to caring for her skin, drawing on the knowledge she had grown up with while also relying on appropriate medical care.

One of the remedies that stayed with her was castor oil and the traditional use of the castor plant. She remembers learning about using castor leaves as a poultice and castor oil as part of traditional approaches to soothing inflamed skin.

Those experiences shaped the way she thought about plants, oils and skincare.

They also planted a much bigger question:

What if we could bring some of this wisdom into beautifully made, accessible products for everyday life?

Then Came the Next Generation

Years later, Mumtaz became a mother herself.

And once again, natural remedies became part of a family’s search for ways to support someone they loved.

Her eldest child – who would eventually become a co-founder and the inspiration behind Amani Botanica – was diagnosed with photosensitive epilepsy at twelve.

Less than a year later came another diagnosis: autism.

Once again, the family found themselves navigating a world where there were questions, uncertainty and a desire to do everything possible to support their child.

They sought medical guidance and treatment, while also exploring ways that lifestyle, environment, nutrition and natural approaches could form part of a broader approach to wellbeing.

That journey reinforced something Mumtaz had learned as a child:

There is value in knowledge.

There is value in asking questions.

There is value in learning from generations before us.

And there is value in understanding the natural world around us.

From Family Wisdom to Amani Botanica

Amani Botanica was born from these experiences.

Not from a desire to reject modern medicine.

Not from the belief that natural products can cure disease.

And certainly not from the idea that one remedy can work for everyone.

It was born from something much simpler:

A desire to reconnect with the wisdom of nature and make beautiful, thoughtful botanical products accessible to more people.

We believe that skincare can be more than a collection of ingredients in a bottle.

It can be a ritual.

It can be a moment of care.

It can be a connection to heritage.

It can be a reminder that some of the most enduring knowledge we have is knowledge that has been carried from one generation to another.

A Place of Botanical Wisdom

The name Amani means peace.

And that is what we hope to create.

Amani Botanica is intended to be more than a skincare brand.

We want it to become a place where people can discover botanical ingredients, learn about traditional uses, explore thoughtful formulations and find products that make everyday self-care feel meaningful.

We want to share what we learn.

We want to listen to our customers.

We want to respect traditional knowledge while continuing to learn from modern science.

And we want to create products that are beautiful, considered and accessible – without asking people to spend more than they need to.

Because natural shouldn’t have to mean inaccessible.

Beautiful shouldn’t have to mean unaffordable.

And caring for yourself shouldn’t have to feel complicated.

Our Journey Is Just Beginning

Amani Botanica is still at the beginning of its story.

What started with a mother who grew up surrounded by traditional remedies has travelled through generations.

From our grandmother’s world…

To our mother’s hands…

To Mumtaz’s own journey with her skin…

To the experiences of her children…

And now, into Amani Botanica.

Every soap, oil, butter, candle, tea and botanical product we create carries a little piece of that journey.

We are not here to promise miracles.

We are here to create thoughtful products, share knowledge, celebrate botanical ingredients and honour the wisdom that brought us here.

Because sometimes the things that shape our future begin with what our families taught us long ago.

Welcome to Amani Botanica.

A place where botanical wisdom meets modern self-care.

And this is only the beginning.
